I wanted to share a little about my journey with OCD, in the hopes of shedding light on what it truly means to live with this condition. It's not as glamorous as some might think. So often, I hear people casually say, "Oh, I wish I had OCD, then I could keep things tidy and organized." But let me assure you, it's a lot more intricate and challenging than that.
It's not about having a clean room or being organized. It's about a continuous battle within, a struggle that's often unseen. While you might notice the external actions, what you don't see is the constant chatter in my mind, the persistent belief that if I don't arrange things just so, something terrible will happen. You might not be aware of the rituals I perform, moving an object repeatedly until it feels "right," or needing to do things in threes.
Simple tasks become complex puzzles. I can't drive comfortably with someone because I'm compelled to check and recheck the surroundings or objects in the car to fit a specific pattern. It's more than just keeping my space tidy; it's a mental maze that affects me on a daily basis.
OCD isn't just about cleanliness. It's about washing hands until they feel "right," about waiting for a certain number of breaths before stepping outside, about performing rituals in a particular sequence before a door can be opened. It's about the internal pressure that prevents me from functioning until everything is "perfect."
OCD and the Weight of Thoughts:
Living with OCD is like having an incessant voice in your head, urging you to take action, insisting that something is wrong. It's not a simple quirk; it's a daily battle that affects the most mundane activities. Any disruption in my routine triggers panic, leading me to scramble and set things "right."
Intrusive thoughts, unwanted images, and sensations flood my mind, making even ordinary tasks a challenge. A touch can trigger a feeling of contamination, my own heartbeat can become an annoyance, and memories loop endlessly in my mind. These are the lesser-known aspects of OCD – the constant stream of thoughts that play tricks on my reality.
I share this not for sympathy, but for understanding. Living with OCD is a complex, internal struggle that often goes unnoticed. It's more than just tidying up; it's about the intricate web of thoughts and rituals that govern my everyday life.
So, the next time you hear someone casually mention OCD, remember that it's not just about cleanliness or order. It's about the silent battles fought within, the rituals performed to find a semblance of calm amidst the chaos.
